POSITION TITLE: Manager, Visitor & On-Site Programs
REPORTS TO:     Chief of Education
LOCATION:       Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

POSITION SUMMARY:
The section is responsible for creating programs for our general museum visitors throughout the four Museum facilities. These programs should focus on the value-added impact and help drive return visitation.  This section consists of: the Discovery Center, the Insect Zoo, the volunteer programs at the Page, Hart and Petersen Museum sites, and the Education Collection.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Š Supervise, evaluate, and manage five program coordinators of the Discovery Center, the Insect Zoo, the Volunteer programs at the Page, Hart, and Petersen Museum sites, and the Education Collection and their related program support staff.
Š Ensure that the development of programs for the Discovery Center, Insect Zoo, and Education Collection is aligned with Museum and Division mission and vision.
Š Guide development of on-site programs at the Page, Petersen, and Hart Museums.
Š Oversee coordination of annual section budget, monitor and control budgetary expenditures for Visitor/On-Site program areas.
Š Oversee management of day-to-day operations of on-site programs at the four museum locations.
Š Provide leadership to the Visitor/On-Site Programs section and assist Chief of Education in setting goals and objectives for programs.
Š Ensure that the development of all on-site programs is aligned with the state and national frameworks.
Š Work with managers of School/Teacher programs and Supported programs to ensure integration of programs, consistency in program implementation, and unification in vision.
Š Problem solving of a complex nature bringing recommendations to Chief of Education for resolution.
Š Development of new program ideas and assistance in grant development for new and continuing programs.
Š Participate in work teams across departments on an ongoing basis such as special and traveling exhibits, strategic and operational planning.
 OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Š Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Š Qualified persons should have a minimum of five years experience in museum education with proven success in program development and implementation.
Š Minimum three - five years in a supervisory role with experience in managing a diverse staff.
Š Demonstrated working knowledge of current educational theory and state and national frameworks.
Š Minimum three - five years managing detailed budgets.
Š Bachelors Degree required, Masters Degree preferred, with graduate level course work in education or natural history/science.
Š Demonstrated effective oral and written communications skills necessary.
Š Excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational capabilities, enthusiasm, flexibility and a willingness to work as a member of a team are essential.
Š Macintosh computer skills and a working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Works, and Page Maker preferred.

HOURS: This is a full time, exempt position in management.  8 hours per day, Monday to Friday and may include evening and weekend hours.

STARTING WAGE: DOE plus excellent benefits.
