Dear Kimberly:
Depending upon the date of the circumstance, the phrase four-in-hand more recently distinguishes  the necktie as a long one versus a bow tie.  Four in hand is a common knot today, and is a long, thin necktie knot as opposed to, say a windsor or half-windsor knot, which are wider and
fatter knots.
