Job Title: Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs
Announcement Number: EX-0101
Salary: $101,566 to $130,200
Position Type: Full Time, Senior Level

Closing Date: March 9, 2001

Duties/Responsibilities: Provides leadership and direction to the Office of
Curatorial Affairs.  Formulates program goals and objectives.  Develops and
monitors short/long-term plans.  Makes policy decisions concerning programs,
budget, staffing and organization.  Together  with the Museum Director,
oversees curatorial planning, establishes standards for research and
collections staff, and develops performance standards for subordinate
managers (including evaluating their performance).  Plans and implements
Smithsonian and Museum objectives in staff and program diversity, staff
development, and labor relations.  Serves as member of Director's Council
and is key advisor to Director on scholarly and collections programs/issues.
 Performs historical research, participates in national and international
conferences.  Develops joint program in cooperation with universities,
museums and community groups.  Provides expert consultation to professional
organizations.

Successful Applicants Must Document the Following:
     *  Demonstrated skill in leading and managing a staff engaged in public
        history.
     *  Skill in outreach to diverse audiences.
     *  Skill in interpreting American history.
     *  Ability to develop a strategic scholarly plan for the Museum.
     *  Demonstrated ability to implement and/or promote diversity policies
        and programs.
     *  Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with staff.
     *  Skill in overseeing multiple, long-term exhibition and public
        programs.
     *  Demonstrated ability to manage work in a complex organization.
     *  Advanced degree in a related subject matter field.
