Boston Public Library
P/T Educational Programming Coordinator (John Adams Grant)

Under the direction of the John Adams Grant Manager, creates and implements
programming for children and young adults at the Boston Public Library, at
the central library in Copley Square and in the branches; creates and
distributes discovery kits; participates in any children/teen programming-
related initiatives. Programming will focus on John Adam’s reading, book
collecting and his relationship with his own books, many of which are
heavily annotated.

Reports to: John Adams Grant Manager

Essential Functions:
1. Works with Grant Manager to select material to use in educational
programs, kits, and other educational related activities.
2. Works with state educators and Advisory Board to create relevant
programming, integrating Adams Library content with existing Massachusetts
State social studies or language arts curricula. Conducts focus groups and
workshops for educators and librarians.
3. Designs programming and materials; creates delivery system; implements
and publicizes.
4. Designs and distributes at least 10 Discovery kits for Elementary,
Middle and High School students. There will be 3 copies of each kit.
5. Interviews and hires dramatic characters or works with City Stage on
block programming.
5. Maintains current programming information on BPL children’s and teen web
pages.
6. Maintains close working relationship with Communications Dept. for PR;
researches and suggests creative publicity initiatives.
7. Works with Grant Manager to manage the programming budget and grant
activates in a timely fashion.
8. Performs related functions as assigned.

Knowledge, skill and abilities required:
1. Experience in development of public programming or educational
curriculum for children and teens.
2. Demonstrated ability to plan, direct, coordinate, and implement project
related activities.
3. Knowledge of Massachusetts History, Social Science and English Language
Arts Curriculum Frameworks.
4. Knowledge of age appropriate material and presentations for school age
students, and creative ability to transform material and presentations into
dynamic and enjoyable learning experiences.
5. Computer literacy; technology skills.

Qualifications
1. Degree in Education, Museum Studies, Library Science or related field.
2. Desired attributes: self-directed; works well independently or in a
group, adaptability.
3. Boston residency.

Schedule & Compensation
1. Part-time, flexible, 18 hours per week.
2. $25/hour, estimated duration through 1st Quarter 2006.

Requirements: Must be a Resident of the City of Boston upon first day of
hire.
