"I view the sharing of the collection and its archives, through
exhibitions and loans to museums, as a natural obligation of the
collector. I am particularly focused on making works of art in my
collection available in regions and to people who normally are not
availed to the opportunity for seeing a spectrum of contemporary art..."

Robert J. Shiffler, Art Collector

Dear Museum Directors and Curators:

The Robert J. Shiffler Foundation is now in the process of organizing
COLLECTING:Collecting, an exhibition which will soon be available to
tour the United States. To fulfill the Foundation’s mission, and Mr.
Shiffler’s desire to create opportunities for atypical audiences to
experience "world class" contemporary works of art, we are searching for
appropriate venues to lend COLLECTING:collecting.

We would like to hear from museums and university art galleries
interested in this project. In addition, if you know of another
institutions that may be interested in presenting COLLECTING:collecting
feel free to forward this information on to them.

Part of the Robert J. Shiffler Foundation’s mission is to facilitate the
exhibition of cutting-edge contemporary art at institutions, with modest
budgets, serving communities outside of major metropolitan areas.
However, participation in this project necessitates meeting specific
staffing and physical facility requirements to ensure the safety
artworks. Institutions should forward information on staff and their
facility with their inquiry.

ABOUT COLLECTING:collecting:

COLLECTING:collecting, will showcase art made by emerging artists, as
well as highly respected ones. Some of the artist to be included are:
Jenny Holzer, Tony Oursler, Tony Feher, Charles LeDray, Karn Finley, Mel
Zieglar & Kate Ericson, Gregory Green, Donald Lipski, Bern Porter, and
Brian Tolle. All the art in COLLECTING:collecting will be selected
from Robert J. Shiffler’s "world class" art collection and archive. As
well, each piece being a collection of a particular sort -- thus the
exhibition title Collecting:collecting.

COLLECTING:collecting is about the act of collecting, understood from
both the art collector’s and art maker’s viewpoint. It is about a
passion - the desire to acquire, and the wish to make visible through
the display of carefully selected acquisitions (or creations), one’s own
cultural and/or personal identity. The wish, so to speak, to define
ones self through possessions.

It is said, the best way to get rid of a desire is to satisfy it. For,
as the philosopher Jean Baudrillard rightly noted, "The practice of
collecting is not equivalent to a sexual practice, as so far as it does
not seek to still a desire. None the less, it can bring about a
reactive satisfaction that is every bit as intense".

As such, the artworks owned by Mr. Shiffler and the objects in every
unique collection created by the artists in COLLECTING:collecting have
in common the fact that they are, or at one time were, "loved objects".
