Belair, a 1745 historic house built by a colonial governor of Maryland was
substantially renovated in 1815 and again in 1914. Occupancy lasted until
1955. Our furnishing plan culled existing architectural features,
surviving documentation, and site-specific collection items, and we found
that a number of our rooms neatly ordered themselves to different
chronological periods. We too have worried that it is a feature lost on
much of the public and it is far more a curatorial exercise. However, we
did find a unifying interpretive theme to carry a story-line throught the
museum to knit it all together -- in our case, the home to the earliest
American thoroughbred race horses in 1747, which lasted through two triple
crown winners in the 1930s, and horse of the year for 1955.
