Applications are invited for appointment to the post of:

DIRECTOR: KILLIE CAMPBELL COLLECTIONS

Ref No:D11/96 Closing Date: 16 February 1996

The University of Natal, Durban Centre, is seeking an outstanding
academic and researcher to fill the position of Director of the
Campbell Collections at Muckleneuk, the historic home of the Campbell
family.

The appointment will be made at the Professorial level and the
successful applicant will have the dual responsibility of managing
and developing one of the foremost collections of archival, oral
and ethnographic material in KwaZulu-Natal and, in association with
the Humanities Faculties in both Pietermaritzburg and Durban, of
stimulating research and graduate studies in disciplines related to
the content of the Collections. A Doctorate and proven research and
publication record in disciplines such as History and particularly
Southern African History, Social or Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology
and Cultural Studies are a sine quo non of the position. Evidence of
success in multidisciplinary research and teaching will be a strong
recommendation, as will be the experience of working in and leading
multidisciplinary research teams. Managerial and fund-raising skills
will be an essential component of the position and hands-on experience
of using and/or curating archival, manuscripts and ethnographic
material, and experience of moving beyond traditional techniques of
preservation and dissemination to computerisation and electronic
resource networking will be a recommendation. Advantageous also will
be a familiarity with both local and international debates in
museumology and in cultural and artistic representation in museum and
exhibitiion display.

A working knowledge of archival and ethnographic collections in
KwaZulu-Natal, especially of the Campbell Collections, will be a strong
recommendation. The University is committed to the process of regional
collaboration in research and teaching and to develop cultural and
educational outreach programmes using the resources of the Campbell
Collections to the benefit of all the people of the region.

Qualified and interested persons are invited to forward a curriculum
vitae (CV) which should also list the names and postal addresses, fax
numbers and e-mail addresses of three contactable referees, to the
Advertising Officer, Human Resources Division, University of Natal,
Private Bag X10, Dalbridge, 4014. Telephone (031)260-1446, fax
