Good Afternoon Tracy,
Isn't the odor part of the artifacts' story?.....evidence of it cultural
environment? It's like removing the scent of incense from liturgical
apparel. I can think of many artifacts, where their "scent" can tell us
much about how they were made, used, and stored.
If the textiles are "stable" I would leave them alone.
Best Wishes,
Wesley

Subject: Tobacco smoke odor removal

Greetings all-
The Anasazi Heritage Center has received a donation of historic Navajo
wool
textiles. Unfortunately they resided in a location where they were
subjected to decades of tobacco smoke.
First, does anyone have experience in the removal of the tobacco odor
from
wool? Yellowing and grime are also a problem, but the odor is of the
most
immediate concern.
Second, does anyone have experience using zeolite MicroChamber
Interleaving paper for smoke odor removal? It is listed in the
Conservation Resources International catalog as a product that works for
such things, but would like to know if anyone has experience with it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Tracy
