Position Description

Background:
The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) will celebrate the similarities and differences of the world's cultures as expressed through music - a language common to us all.  With musical instruments from every country in the world, MIM will pay homage to the history and diversity of instruments and introduce museum guests to their varied and unique sounds.  MIM will be an engaging, entertaining and informative experience, in which the uninitiated and the knowledgeable, the young and the old will feel welcome. The 190,000 square foot building is currently under construction in Phoenix, Arizona and the museum opening is scheduled for April 24, 2010. Duties:
MIM seeks an experienced, energetic and highly motivated individual to fill the position of Chief Registrar at a museum whose collections are rapidly growing and that will soon be moved to the museum's permanent location. 

The Chief Registrar will be responsible for directing and implementing all registration activities for MIM as it builds and cares for an outstanding global collection that already numbers more than 9,000 musical instruments and associated objects.  The individual in this position will manage the Registration and Collections Management Department and will coordinate with other MIM departments, including Conservation, Curatorial, Exhibits, Education, Operations, and Security.  

The ideal candidate must have strong managerial, planning, collaborative, and problem-solving skills. This person will be pivotal in collaborating with the Senior Project Manager and the President to ensure efficient and effective delivery of collections support services with regard to development and implementation of MIM exhibits for opening day and beyond. This position reports to the President and Director and, in addition, will include oversight of the following:

*	manage a department that for the start-up phase of the museum includes three assistant registrars and a large team of registration assistants, collections coordinators, and collections technicians
*	refine plans, policies, and procedures relevant to the collections and their cataloguing and care 
*	work with curators to make recommendations for accessions and deaccessions
*	develop the overall plan for storage of those instruments that will not be on exhibit when the museum opens
*	implement the process of safe transport of acquisitions and of the collection from our temporary storage facility to the new museum building
*	fully implement software programs to meet collection management requirements 
*	process incoming and outgoing loans on a timely basis
*	develop budgets for the Registration and Collections Management Department



Qualifications:

*	advanced degree in an area related to museum studies, collections management, and/or a field related to music or musical instrument research
*	high energy level, flexibility, and innovative problem solving are requisite to accommodate the fast-paced development of a significant collection of musical instruments in tandem with an aggressive exhibit production plan
*	ability to effectively prioritize and execute/delegate tasks is essential
*	proven abilities in management and administration within a museum or related institution 
*	ability to multi-task and effectively manage people
*	ability to collaboratively work in a team-based environment;
*	expertise in museum collection management software (MIM is using TMS);
*	extensive knowledge of collecting ethics, current customs regulations, and transportation solutions in the arts;
*	strong leadership skills, understanding of how to communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully, and experience with successfully motivating people
*	excellent written and verbal communication skills

Other:
*	This position currently reports to the President and Director
*	Located in Tempe, AZ during planning stages of MIM; located in Phoenix, AZ once museum building completed 
*	Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
