I would agree with this.  If you enter the country on a tourist visa and
you are found out then you are liable to be deported and may well find
that you're not allowed back in the UK.

The Univeristy of York's International Student web site has lots of
useful information:

I would also check out 

http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/

The official Government Visa web site.  If you click on the "Do I need a
Visa?" it will work out what sort of Visa you need.  The relevant
British consulates may be able to advise on what you need to take with
you to show that you can support yourself.
