Usually to share information with others (curators) who might want to borrow
from you, or to provide some educational info for students/scholars or the
media who are writing papers.  Of course you will not post sensitive
information such as donor names or insurance values, but just enough for
someone doing a search on objects to realize what may be in that museum's
collection, and whether they should make further arrangements to visit that
museum if more research is required.
