Midwest Archives Conference Annual Spring Meeting
Chicago, Illinois, May 3-5, 2001
http://www.midwestarchives.org/spring2001/

The Midwest Archives Conference (MAC) is pleased to announce its Spring 2001
Meeting in Chicago, Illinois on May 3-5. Please join us at the Midland
Hotel, 172 West Adams Street in Chicago's Loop, for the end of a Spring
tradition -- after twenty-nine consecutive Spring MAC meetings in the Windy
City, MAC heads to Minneapolis in Spring, 2002. This year's sessions are
framed around four broad archival issues: the preservation of digital
objects; electronic records and information management; collaboration and
building partnerships; and documenting society.

The opening Plenary Address begins at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, with
Reagan Moore, Associate Director of Data Intensive Computing at the San
Diego Supercomputer Center. Mr. Moore will discuss the work of the Center,
which has been collaborating with the National Archives to explore the
preservation of digital objects in the context of new technologies.
Additional sessions focusing on electronic records, the preservation of
digital objects, and information management include panels on the selection,
implementation and management of Records Management Applications, E-mail,
and digital preservation programs.

More and more projects involve working with other professionals and new
methods. Sessions on collaboration and building partnerships cover
identifying partners within the organization, continuing education and the
types of knowledge that will be needed in the future, and a session that
brings together an auditor, an information technology specialist, and an
attorney.

Another growing area of archival focus is addressed in sessions on
documenting society. Panels discuss outreach, collaboration, and
documentation strategies for establishing and interpreting collections on
such topics as Rural Life and Agriculture in Minnesota and North Dakota, and
Racial and Nonwhite ethnic populations.

Other session topics include an overview of the core areas of U.S. copyright
law, implementing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) in small archives,
functioning effectively in an "age of abundance," the Internet and its
users, and Exhibiting Lewis and Clark.

Special events and tours celebrate Chicago's unique personality, rich
archival repositories, and famous cuisine. The opening reception, a Cinco
de Mayo celebration, will be held on Thursday evening, May 3, at the
Archdiocese of Chicago's Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Archives and Records
Center. Tours include the Jane Addams' Hull-House Museum, Northwestern
Memorial Hospital, Chicago Public Library's Special Collections, the Mexican
Fine Arts Center Museum in Pilsen, the Newberry Library and a Chicago
Architecture Tour. Several tours will end at nearby restaurants.

Several pre-conference workshops complement the conference sessions. MAC
workshops include Fundamentals of Reference; Supervision: Leadership Skills
for People Managers; and Introduction to Audiovisual Archives. The SAA is
offering Archival Cataloging as a Component of Description (Workshop #0106).

The complete program, information about accommodations, and registration
forms are available on the MAC website at
http://www.midwestarchives.org/spring2001/. The advance registration fee is
$45 for MAC members and $55 for non-members; the deadline for advance
registration is April 2, 2001. Additional registration fees apply to MAC
and SAA workshops. For further information about the Midwest Archives
