Curator of Asian Art
The Newark Museum, New Jersey

Founded in 1909, The Newark Museum is the most significant encyclopedic
museum in New Jersey and one of the most comprehensive museums in the west
for Asian art. The museum opened with a collection of 3,000 Japanese
objects and swiftly expanded its holdings to include important works from
China, Korea, Tibet and other Southeast Asian nations. A 1923 exhibition on
Chinese culture was the first such exhibition in the United States, and the
current Asian collection numbers some 30,000 objects, displayed in eleven
galleries, covering all materials and aesthetics ranging from the Neolithic
Period to contemporary times.

Especially notable is the collection of Tibetan art, which has been referred
to as "the Louvre of Tibetan art," and which is universally acknowledged to
be the largest and most important collection of Tibetan art in the west.
The collection consists of sculpture, painting, ritual and secular objects
and artifacts, costumes and documents, and dates primarily from the 8th
through the 20th centuries, the majority of which was obtained directly from
Tibet or Tibetans.

The primary responsibilities of the Curator are the research, documentation,
exhibition planning, interpretation and continued development of these
world-renowned collections, and to further enrich the knowledge,
understanding and appreciation of the cultures and ideas they represent.
The Curator must have an understanding of the complexity and broad
socio-cultural significance of the collections and an active interest in
communicating the products of scholarship to a broad public audience. In
the tradition of its Founding Director, John Cotton Dana, The Newark Museum
is committed to promoting the appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of
the arts, and the Curator must continue in this tradition of enlivening and
enhancing the experiences of visitors of all ages and from all walks of
life.

The Curator recommends new works for acquisition; identifies objects in need
of conservation; works with Registrars and the Exhibitions Dept. to ensure
collection safety during storage, transit, installation and exhibition;
updates and organizes all collections records; cultivates donors of objects
and funds for department-related acquisitions; stays abreast of market
developments both nationally and internationally; participates in all
deaccessioning reviews and processes; analyzes and approves loan requests;
organizes exhibitions of both Newark Museum collection and loaned materials;
writes essays and texts for museum publications; creates wall labels and
related materials for museum exhibitions; assists in the writing of grant
proposals; participates in outside symposia, publications and other related
programming; and performs other related duties.

An MA in art history or museum/curatorial studies (Ph.D. strongly preferred)
with a focus on Asian/Tibetan art and a minimum of five years curatorial
experience are required. A strong publication history, familiarity with
Asian languages and extensive knowledge of collections management
procedures, exhibition development and current museum practices are
essential. Excellent communications, writing and interpersonal skills are
necessary. An active profile in the international community of Asian arts
scholars and specialists is of utmost importance. The candidate must
possess a strong belief in the primacy of education and the importance of
rigorous standards of scholarship as well as the ability to communicate and
work with the museum as an organizational whole. Please send resume,
detailed cover letter, publication history and contact information for at
least three references to:
