Although a number of state and federal agencies with museums or interpretive
centers have central repositories, establishing a facility like that to
serve a number of independent non-profits would require a lot of trust
between the cooperating institutions. Perhaps someone on the list will be
able to provide an instance of this happening.

Providing support is much easier, and often done by state institutions
(e.g., the Washington State Historical Society's Heritage Resource Center)
and by large museums that feel a professional obligation to help out smaller
museums and historical societies. The support most often takes the form of
formal and informal consultations and technical assistance, sponsorship of
conferences, and occasionally loan of materials, etc.

The kind of service and support you are contemplating is often much-needed
in rural regions and I hope you are able to provide it.
