to our non-American friends:

I would just like to apologize for the narcissistic American attitude
that you have encountered on the list. As children we are socialized in
this self absorbed rhetoric. Those of us who are aware of this conceit
do try to fight this ingrained impulse (sometimes unsuccessfully).

On the other hand - a person can only relate the experiences that are
familiar or that have been experienced. If that life experience (i do
apologize for the overuse of the word experience - but i am not finished
with my morning cup of coffee.) is a solely American one then - well -
.............

I wish I had the advantage that Europeans have in that the next culture
or language or country is only next door. But I am sitting in the
middle of Texas - where it takes 15 hours of driving to leave the state
- let alone the country and to experience what is only 15 minutes away
for you - I will have to "take the trip of a lifetime" as they like to
say here.

So - I ask you - on behalf of all of us isolated Americans - keep us
informed and tell us your experience so that we may grow beyond our
narrow view. The internet is a grand invention - let's use it to its
fullest potential.
