 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Legislation establishing the National Museum of the American
Indian (NMAI) as part of the Smithsonian Institution was signed
in 1989. NMAI's mission shall recognize and affirm to Native
communities and the non-Native public the historical and
contemporary culture and cultural achievements of the Natives
of the Western Hemisphere by advancing, in consultation,
collaboration and cooperation with Natives, knowledge and
understanding of Native cultures, including art, history, and
language, and by recognizing the museum's special
responsibility, through innovative public programming,
research, and collections, to protect, support and enhance the
development, maintenance, and perpetuation of Native culture
and community.

NMAI has two facilities in New York City - the George Gustav
Heye Center in Manhattan and the Research Branch in the
Bronx. Additionally, the museum has executive and staff offices
in Washington, DC.

The museum in Washington will be built on the National Mall
near the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and is
expected to be completed by 2002. In addition to the Mall
museum, a Cultural Resources Center will be built in Suitland,
Maryland, about six miles from the Capitol. This center is
scheduled to open in 1998 and will replace the Research
Branch in the Bronx. It will house the collections and will
accommodate associated activities such as research,
collections conservation, exhibition support, and outreach
services.
