Clay,
We have loan boxes, called discovery boxes, that are well-loved by local
teachers. We're a history museum so each box has a different theme based
on an era or event in history. The boxes include a teacher's manual with
an artifact guide, historic timeline, and information on notable people,
places, and events related to our mission area, copies of primary source
documents and photos, plus the artifacts. We include lesson plans based
on specific curriculum frameworks. The artifact guide has a picture of
the artifact, because some are hard to identify and hard to number, with
pertinent information about that item. The boxes are designed for
teachers to have a unit of study in a box. All of the artifacts are either
from our teaching collection or reproductions. For most of the artifacts
students are invited to touch but some are fragile so we designate those
to be handled by teachers only.

The teachers reserve the boxes for one week, they have to pick them up and
bring them back to the museum. Teachers book the boxes months in advance
for the fall and spring months. We want to duplicate some of the more
popular boxes but right now we just have one of each. We do a teacher
in-service on how to use the boxes and we model some of the activities for
the teachers. Our boxes are available for no charge.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Museum in a Suitcase for Schools Questions

I am interested in developing a Museum in a Suitcase program that can be
taken to local schools. Starting out, it probably will be geared more to
the primary level schools.

Currently, our museum hosts all of the local 4th grade students so many of
the schools are familiar with our museum.

The Museum in a Suitcase program would be handle by docents.

Has anyone developed a Museum in a Suitcase program?

Are there any sample programs I can take a look at?

What was involved in developing the program?

Were there lesson plans involved?

Is it popular?

Thank you!
