There is much to recommend in Krakow. Having worked on an exhibitions
project there during the mid-1990s, I trust things remain very much as I
remember them.

You should base yourself in, or close to the Old Town. I stayed in a then,
newly built and perfectly acceptable 2/3* hotel (Hotel Logos) just yards
from the city walls. You should also visit Jama Michalika, one of the city's
best cafes and an excellent example of Polish art nouveau by Stanislaw
Wyspianski.

The International Cultural Centre in the main square (Rynek Glowny) organise
an impressive range of small exhibitions, conferences and lectures dealing
with the visual arts and the built environment. Polish theatre is
particularly impressive and there are a number of excellent venues across
the City.

St Mary's Church on Rynek Glowny is without doubt one of the most impressive
architectral sights, as is the Wawel (Castle), but be prepared for hoardes
of visitors, particularly at weekends and on public holidays!

Finally, the Jewish Kazimierz quarter is one of the city's hidden gems.
Still very much run down (in places) during the mid 1990s, the arrival of
new money has likely transformed the area since then, but I'm sure it still
retains much its character, whilst it's recent (20th century) history is
most poignant.

Subject: Advice on Krakow

Hello everyone,
I ask for any travel suggestions from those who have been to or are familiar
with Krakwow, Poland. There is so much in terms of the guidebooks, but I
will only be able to stay for a week (leaving Dec. 13/00).
Especially, ideas for the museums (any specific areas within them?) - I am
interested in art and early music and history. Also, I will be traveling on
a shoestring and so any inexpensive/good restaurants?
Best wishes, sorry to bother at this busy time of year - I very much enjoy
reading posts to this list!
Lois Travis
