I just last weekend went to visit my brother and his family in Sacramento,
CA, and we all went to see the California State Railroad Museum. It is
entirely concerned with exactly what you're asking about, very nicely done
with a considerable number of exquisitely restored locomotives and cars of
many types. They also make a very definite point of emphasizing the
indispensable contributions of various minority groups to the railroads,
from the Chinese laborers who cut the way through the Sierras to the
generations of black porters and waiters who worked the passenger trains.

I don't have their address, but they'll be in the phone book.
