Santiago Calatrava will present Redding's Pedestrian Bridge at Turtle
Bay project on Friday September 19 at noon at the Doubletree
Hotel in Redding, CA. Tickets are $14; call 916/243-8850 for details.

Project Description:
The Pedestrian Bridge Project at Turtle Bay is a unique civic monument
of international stature that will catapult Redding to the cultural
center of the North State. Designed by world-renowned architect Dr.
Santiago Calatrava, with Redding engineering firm Sharrah, Dunlap,
Sawyer, Inc. as project managers, the bridge will span a majestic arch
over the Sacramento River, to culminate in a soaring spire.
With a design based on the geometry of nature in movement, the clean
sweep of the bridge evokes a sense of weightlessness, yet is solidly
supported at the southern and northern riverbank, reflecting rather than
disturbing the riparian ecosystem. The design plan includes a
multiple-use plaza at the northern terminus, and the bridge’s single
spire will serve as a large sundial, lending an intriguing interactive
component.

The Pedestrian Bridge Project at Turtle Bay will create an integral
extension of the Sacramento River Trail across the river and unify the
300-acre campus of the Turtle Bay Museums and Arboretum on the River.
Perhaps most importantly, it will provide residents and visitors with a
remarkable gathering place. This dramatic step into the future will be a
striking new centerpiece for our community, offering a visionary focus
on our greatest natural asset —the Sacramento River.

  The Architect
Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava's fluid, dynamic designs have
commanded worldwide attention since his arrival on the international
scene in 1981. Calatrava received a Ph.D. in Technical Science from the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and honorary doctorates from
University Politechnic Valencia, University of Seville and Heriot-Watt
in Edinburgh.

Though Calatrava has designed numerous structures throughout Europe, he
is perhaps best known for his startlingly original bridges. Calatrava
conceives of a bridge as an important point of reference in a community
— a structure that adds excitement to a landscape. Employing his
expertise as both engineer and architect, Calatrava’s projects offer
daring, yet simple, solutions to complex technical challenges.
Exhibitions of Dr. Calatrava's work have been mounted at the Museum of
Modern Art in New York, the Milwaukee Art Museum and numerous museums in
London, Tokyo, Moscow, Copenhagen, Munich, Stockholm and Zurich. He was
featured in the November '96 issue of Smithsonian Magazine and was
chosen by the Milwaukee Art Museum to design its planned $27 million
addition to Eero Saarinen’s celebrated original building.
With its stunning design informed by the architect’s signature
environmental sensitivity and the flow of the Sacramento River itself,
Calatrava’s Pedestrian Bridge Project will surely become an
unforgettable attraction for North State visitors and residents. Redding
is most fortunate to have this master visionary create a historic
monument for our community.
