Kelli, I am not aware of any standard. I usually choose based on the
size of the bag and what's going to be put into it. Larger bags
generally should be thicker, say 4 mil or even 6, to accommodate the
larger, hence perhaps heavier stuff that will be put into them. Smaller
bags can be thinner, unless you are storing materials that would benefit
from the stiffness that a thicker plastic would provide. If, on the
other hand, you want to be able to fold the bags to conform to the
objects within, or you want them floppy to allow more bags to fit into a
space, you'll want thinner plastic. Sharp prickly stuff will require
thicker bags so it doesn't puncture them. In other words, consider the
needs of your artifacts.
Best regards,

Subject: artifact bag thickness

For my second question of the day, when bagging artifacts (of any kind)
for
storage, is there a museum standard for the thickness of the bag? 2mm,
3mm,
4mm, etc.? Thanks again for any responses.

Kelli
