Director of Museum Security





The   Asian   Art  Museum  is  seeking  an  experienced,  dynamic  security

professional  to  direct  a comprehensive state-of-the-art security program

for a spectacular facility in San Francisco’s Civic Center.



The  Director  of  Museum Security is responsible for the protection of the

museum  facilities,  the  collections,  and  visitors and staff from theft,

fire,  injury,  and  other  damage.   He/she provides leadership in visitor

services  management  and  ensures  that  the security staff is trained and

evaluated  in  regard  to  visitor/customer service. Reporting to the Chief

Operating Officer, the Director of Museum Security plays a critical role in

the museum management.



The  incumbent  is required to adhere to a professional code of ethics, and

to  effectively  represent  the  Asian Art Museum with a variety of outside

agencies,  diverse  cultural  and  other  organizations,  and other museums

nationally and internationally.



Major areas of responsibility will include:



§      Planning, directing, training, and managing the staff and operations

of the Museum Security Services Department to provide 24-hour/day security,

7 days/week.  (The department currently consists of 33 officers & 3

supervisors.)



§      Developing and implementing safety and security policies and

procedures; ensuring that they are understood and carried out by all

security personnel; formulating training programs; assisting, advising, and

guiding all museum departments regarding security regulations and

procedures.



§      Coordinating museum-wide disaster planning and response.



§      Developing and administering departmental budget; establishing

appropriate staffing levels to meet program needs and identifying means to

attain staffing goals; directing studies to improve efficiency and economy

in operations; ensuring continuous improvement in departmental services to

meet or exceed internal and external customer expectations; assuming a lead

role in fostering effective labor management relations.



§      Working closely with Visitor Services Department to establish and

administer effective policies and procedures relative to daily visitor

access-related operations; ensures that all security personnel are trained

and evaluated relative to visitor services.





Minimum Qualifications



·      Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. (Current

certification as a Certified Protection Professional [CPP] by the American

Society for Industrial Security may substitute for the required

baccalaureate degree.)

·      Five (5) years of supervisory and leadership experience managing an

operational law-enforcement unit: must include experience in

investigations, fire protection, and emergency preparedness.  Experience in

the field of protection of high-value or cultural property is highly

desirable.

·      Demonstrated success in the development and implementation of an

effective security program: proven track record in team leadership, staff

supervision, and budget management.

·      Comprehensive knowledge of all established rules, procedures, and

methods of operation of a security force: including knowledge of a diverse

range of security equipment, devices, protective procedures and activities

including highly specialized operating requirements, methods, and

procedures in order to safeguard personnel and property, including art

treasures, from possible danger or damage or criminal or terrorist

activity.

·      Knowledge of: physical security, law enforcement, search and

apprehend procedures and methods: personal detention and arrest procedures

and controlling laws; crowd control techniques; methods of dealing with

threats against personnel or property; investigative procedures and

techniques; methods to detect criminal activity or possible criminal

activity and procedures for resolving those activities; fire-fighting

procedures, fire detection systems, and fire alarm response actions;

surveillance monitoring and closed-circuit television.

·      Ability to: train, supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate staff:

establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with

a variety of representatives of public and private organizations;

successfully achieve objectives in a complex, union environment.

·      Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organizational

skills: excellent written and oral communication skills; effective

presentation, negotiation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.

·      Ability to: effectively and persuasively articulate components of

security program: develop model programs and forge partnerships;

successfully integrate visitor services activities with the security

program; plan, organize, administer, coordinate, review, and evaluate

complex and interrelated functions and services; develop and manage

budgets.

·      Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.



Compensation



$70,200– 85,332 annually with excellent benefits package*

*This  is  civil  service position of the City and County of San Francisco.

Successful  participation  in a civil service examination is a condition of

employment.
