Our archives has an on-going project to borrow personal photos donors
do not want to give up, scan them at high-resolution, then give the
originals and a DVD of the scans back to the owner. The photos are
attached to our PP cataloging, shown as digital record only and under
publication restriction for 10 years (owner must be notified--we have
also stated that if the donor dies the restriction dies with it). There
are so many great photos out there in private hands that get
lost-pitched-destroyed when the owner dies or moves, that we feel that
this way at least we have a digital record of the people/place/event.
To give you an example, our local newspaper allowed me to go into their
photo morgue and scan over 300 of the photos there. A year later the
newspaper was sold, then 6 months after that it was closed down, after
140 years being the only newspaper in our small town. The newspaper
people told us that WE would be the owners of its photo morgue, but when
we got there both the old owner and new owner had been thru the files
and 90% of them were gone. Without the scanning project, many one of a
kind photos would have been lost. Will gladly discuss this project with
anyone who wishes. Happy Holiday to everyone! Mary Morris, Clarke Co.
