The Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee has just recently dealt
with this type of problem. They have done an excellent job in
displaying and protecting some civil war flags that had the same
problems of hanging vertically for a long period of time and/or being
in a precarious position due to earlier preservation techniques. The
person to speak with would be Ms. Brunson, the museum curator. She
is an excellent textile curator and would be able to answer your
questions. The phone number where she can be reached is at the Bureau
of Historical Museums (850) 488-1484. I am unsure of her e-mail
address. If she is unavailable, Bruce Gretz may be able to help also.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.
