Many years ago, I worked at a National Military Park (Fort Washington,
MD), then home to several of the NPS artillery instructors (and home to
the civilian muzzle-loading branch of the Military Order of St. Barbara,
whose feast day was Dec. 4). We fired a M 1841 6-pdr and an M 1842 12-pdr
howitzer (blanks. I have also fired a Confederate 12-pdr coehorn mortar
(live).

Unless the NPS has gotten sloppy (or underfunded for such things) the
trainers/training should not be blamed for the stupidity of the trainees.
