Kodak, in conjunction with the Getty Foundation, I believe, is doing
extensive work on schemes for bringing visual collections into the digital
realm.  Kodak's PhotoCD technology provides an accessible solution for
many situations (in terms of cost, multi-platform access, and overall
image quality).  Any of Kodak's 800 numbers would put you in touch with
additional information.
