It's a possibility that what is ongoing was planted
some time ago via a Trojan Horse.  Many of us got
those blank emails sent in HTML.  The explanation
below speaks to NIMDA, but it would apply to some
degree to the current situation.

You may have read that Microsoft took its patch site
down because of Blaster (last week's worm).  Google
News is reporting that this current one is the fastest
ever and may be a hacker and spammer working in
tandem.

But it makes sense to send a virus that knocks
Microsoft out and then come behind and wreak unholy
hell upon the rest of the computers--it makes sense if
you have malevolent intent.  It makes no sense to me
why someone would be this dastardly.
