Duties: Serves as Assistant Collections Manager of Historical
Collections of the NMHM under the general supervision of the Historical
Collections Manager, Historical Collections, National Museum of Health
and Medicine of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. This position
handles a diverse collection of over 200,000 medical instruments and
equipment, documents, models, pharmaceuticals, uniforms and ephemera,
collected and maintained by the museum in the fields of the history of
medicine and related areas. The incumbent participates in day-to-day
activities in the collection, suggesting policy and guidelines,
evaluating potential acquisitions, facilitating conservation activities
for the collection, and conducting research on artifacts in the
collection for cataloging, museum exhibits, publications and lectures.
Tasks are functionally specialized within medical and historical subject
areas and require functional specialization in collections management. 

About the Position: This position is located at the Armed Forces
Institute of Pathology, on the grounds of Walter Reed Army Medical
Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, DC, near the Silver Spring,
MD border. The work is supervised by the Historical Collections Manager
and the work Work requires sitting, use of a computer, walking,
reaching, bending, and use of hands as well as lifting objects up to 40
pounds in weight. Work is generally performed in research, storage,
exhibit and in laboratory areas. Work involves occasional use of power
tools and warehouse moving equipment. Incumbent is required to observe
normal safety precautions when using equipment.

*	Additional duties: Has responsibility for collections care in
accordance with Department of Defense regulations and prevailing
professional guidelines. In accordance with professional practice and
based on professional experience and judgment, prepares historical
artifacts for storage and for use by researchers or exhibitions. Tasks
include application of appropriate preventative conservation and
handling techniques to extend the useful life of the collections.
Handles artifacts for use by non-museum staff and supervises handling of
artifacts by non-collections staff. Maintains Historical Collections
records. Compiles, organizes and preserves records and supporting
documentation for all items in Historical Collections. Coordinates with
Registrar to ensure documentation is obtained that legally transfers
title of materiel to the museum. Catalogs Historical Collection objects
onto a computerized database. Identifies and researches artifacts to
determine historical use and provenance. Performs and provides technical
research services and answers official, professional and public
inquiries by telephone, electronic, written correspondence or in person
about specialized areas represented by the collections. Conducts and
conveys research on collections care and management. Develops guidelines
for policy implementation. Selects and assists in selection and
preparation of historical artifacts for exhibits and publications. Makes
contributions to exhibits by participation on planning, working with
exhibits and production staff, and advising on handling and displaying
artifacts. May be required to assist outside private activities and/or
government entities in the research and development of specialized
exhibits in consultation with museum staff when collections are being
loaned. Knowledges requires by the position: Skill in methods and
techniques in handling fragile historical artifacts to ensure safety and
preservation of the artifacts in Historical Collections. Knowledge of
DOD, AFIP and NMHM regulations, current collections
management/preventative conservation theory, principles, concepts and
methodology to ensure appropriate and safe handling and storage of
museum collections. Knowledge of history of medicine, history of
technology and science, military history, U.S. history and/or other
areas relevant to the collections to be able to accurately identify
artifacts, their significance and provenance. Knowledge is needed to
assist in selecting potential artifacts for loan and exhibition. Skill
in communicating and expressing concepts and information orally and in
written form to researchers and museum staff. 


*	GS-09: One year of experience directly related to the occupation
equivalent to at least the next lower grade level; or Master's or
equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level
graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if
related; or equivalent combinations of experience and education.
