Dear Kim:

The best way to research past auction results in the most extensive way is
the artnet.com site. They have a fine arts auction database to which one may
subscribe for $29.95 per month. Once a member and logged on, one may search
all of the major and minor auction houses in a variety of ways. It is very
thorough and truly amazing.

Artnet.com offers many other free amenities, however, this database is one of
the few that requires a fee. If you are looking for specific results for
specific pieces at certain sales, I know Christie's and Sotheby's websites
have the capabilities to provide those results though I think the information
is limited in terms of the number of years in the past the results are
recorded. Both of these auction houses also have a faxback option to receive
those same results via fax. You simply need the sale number from the
catalogue, or perhaps the dates of the sales, etc. Both of these auction
houses also have libraries and archives and can provide reference assistance.

There are, of course, the hardcopy reference sources that record auction sale
results by sale, by year, by artist, etc. Most good university libraries
have a variety of the sources with the most common being "Leonard's." In
fact, more and more public libraries are carrying these bound resources.

I hope this helps.
