This is a serious suggestion!

How about a custom made inflated form? I am imagining a material sewn 
in the same fashion as the piece, in fact perhaps you can use the 
piece parts as a pattern.

Whoever made this for you would need to be sure it did not leak. How 
about the folks that make all the Macy's day parade floats? It would 
be extremely light weight, may need a periodic inflating but I 
suspect would be relatively easy to maintain.

I would love to have this challenge as an exhibition fabricator! A 
former period in my museum career.
