In reply to Merri Pemberton: While you state the obvious, you also have
no idea if the opinion you (and all of us) have received is anything more
than second-hand anecdotal evidence from a biased or inaccurate source. I
think you really need to do some investigation of your own. Certainly it
is helpful to have the opinions of others, but what happens if you only
have contact with the person who was either the Pollyanna or the malcontent
of the program?
For other sources, take a look at CAA's "Directory of M.A. and
Ph.D. Programs in Art, Art History, and Related Areas", described
at: (http://www.collegeart.org/caa/publications/directories.html). Visit
the Web sites of the programs you might be interested in to see what they
offer. By the way, the state of the Web site is, I believe, a sign at
least of how much the faculty really care about how they and their program
are perceived by the rest of the world. You might also break down and
contact programs yourself: classes and other opportunities offered, how
many people get jobs and/or go on to higher degrees, and so on. You may be
able to make a telephone appointment with one of the faculty to discuss
your interests in more detail.
Yes, that's a lot more work than posting questions to a list and
depending upon the scattered opinions of people you don't know. But it's
also the way to take on your own responsibility in researching a program
where you will be spending a certain amount of time, money, and care.
