CALL FOR STUDENT PROPOSALS
Sponsored by the New York State Historical Association

The Upstate History Alliance & Museum Association of New York seek  
proposals for Student Poster Sessions to be presented at our annual  
conference, the largest gathering of museum professionals in New York  
State.

Long Tails, Tipping Points and Cultural Literacy:
Museums, Trends and Communities
April 15-17, 2007
Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center
Syracuse, New York


Description of the 2007 conference theme:

Long Tails, Tipping Points and Cultural Literacy will explore global  
trends that offer museums and heritage organizations new lenses  
through which we can think about the work we do.  At an ever- 
increasing pace, in every aspect of our work, external trends define  
the directions of institutional mission and impact its success.   
Decisions about why and what to collect, audiences to target, and  
exhibitions and programs to develop turn on a host of factors -  
demographics and social inclusion, economic tourism, and raising test  
scores to name a few.

Call for Proposals:

This year, we seek proposals for poster sessions from undergraduate  
and graduate students that explore the impact of present and future  
trends on the museum environment.  How do the trends you see and  
experience - both broader public trends and trends in the museum  
profession - shape a museums mission and its relationships to its  
community? How can an institution gather, assess and use trends to  
its advantage? What research have you been conducting along these lines?

What is a poster session?

Poster sessions are limited duration presentation (about 10 minutes)  
that can be presented several times in a given time period. Think  
“Science Fair” for the museum world. As a presenter, you will be  
stationed a table and be prepared to speak to interested conference  
participants, some of whom may stay to listen to your entire  
presentation while others may stay for a few minutes and move on.  
Providing visual aides and handouts are encouraged.

When will the poster sessions take place?

Student Presentation Poster Sessions will be presented on the morning  
of Monday April 16, 2007

Financial Assistance

This year, the New York State Historical Association will be  
sponsoring the Poster Sessions at the UHA/MANY Conference. Because of  
this sponsorship, we are able to offer a stipend of $50 to students  
to help offset travel and registration costs. Further financial  
assistance is available to students who take advantage of conference

How to submit a proposal:

Poster Session Proposals should be submitted via email to  
[log in to unmask] and should include the information listed below:

·       Student contact information
·       Undergraduate/Graduate School Affiliation
·       Description of proposed topic and session (500 words or less)
·       Description of proposed visual aids
·       Session Summary for conference brochure (30 words or less)

By submitting a Poster Session Proposal, you are agreeing to:

·       Agree that the scheduling of my session is at the discretion  
of the conference organizers, without exception.
·       Bring 40 copies of a session outline to distribute to session  
attendees
·       Provide handouts and/or session outline in electronic form to  
the conference organizers for posting on conference website.
·       Submit any presenter and description revisions to the  
conference organizers by the designated deadline.
·       Register for the UHA/MANY Conference at a special student rate.

Deadlines:
Submissions for Poster Session Proposals should be received by Friday  
February 16, 2007. Proposals will only be accepted via email at

will be made by March 2, 2007.
