It sounds like a fantastic opportunity--I have had several friends who acted as assistants to directors of major museums and it's a prestigious position with great responsibility and opportunity for growth.  More importantly, since you will be working with all departments, it's a great chance to get an overview of the operations of an art museum as well as to learn about all aspects of curatorial matters.
