SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to announce our
Spring 2003 Preservation Workshops (Please excuse cross-posting):


*************DIGITAL IMAGING OF LIBRARY MATERIALS*****************

Wednesday-Thursday, April 9-10, 2003, University of Louisville, Louisville,
KY from 9am-4pm.

This two-day hands-on workshop is designed for individuals with little to no
experience with digitization. Participants will gain practical experience
scanning and editing image files, and will receive an introduction to the
issues surrounding small to mid-sized library imaging projects.

Topics covered include: equipment requirements for library digitization
projects, equipment calibration, the difference between digital imaging and
optical character recognition, the "scan once" methodology, file types and
compression, basic scanner operation, basic image adjustment and
manipulation using Adobe Photoshop, OCR, terminology used in digitization
projects, preservation of digital masters, file naming, and storage media.

The instructor for this workshop is Steve Smith, Preservation Librarian,
Wellesley College.

Cost is $300 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($280 early bird,
$325 late registration), $360 Non-members ($340 early bird, $385 late
registration). Any institution in louisville qualifies for the member rate.


**********DIGITAL PRESERVATION: ENSURING ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC
RESOURCES***********

Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA from 9:00am
- 4:00pm.

The issue of long-term access to digital information has become an issue of
increasing concern to institutions, information professionals, and the
preservation community. Organizations are rising to the challenge through
collaboration and research in order to find best practices and define
standards that can be followed. Best practices to the digital preservation
challenge are emerging and information professionals now have some models to
follow. This one-day session is designed to introduce the concepts and
challenges of preserving digital information. Topics covered include: The
concept of preservation in a digital world, management of digital
collections (born digital and converted collections), licensing, selection
criteria, metadata, preservation best practices, and discussion of various
research efforts.

Cost for $155 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($145 early bird,
$180 late registration); $195 Non-SOLINET members ($185 early bird, $220
late registration). Any institution within Virginia qualifies for the member
rate.


****ADVANCED BOOK REPAIR FOR GENERAL COLLECTIONS *****

Wednesday-Thursday, May 14-15, 2003 at DeVille Book and Paper Conservation,
New Orleans, LA from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Building upon the skills learned in the Fundamentals of Book Repair and
Intermediate Book Repair workshops, participants will learn more complex
repair and housing techniques designed for modern, clothbound publisher's
bindings that are characteristics of general collections. The focus of this
two-day session is recasing volumes where the text block has become detached
from its cover; constructing enclosures for fragile materials; and
discussing adhesives, workflow, and lab equipment.

This workshop is designed for library staff members with experience in book
repair and/or supervisors of book repair units. Previous attendance at
SOLINET's 'Fundamentals of Book Repair' and 'Intermediate Book Repair' is
mandatory for registration.

Instructors are Tina Mason, Preservation Field Services Officer, SOLINET and
Renee deVille, Conservator, deVille Book and Paper Conservation.

Cost is $175 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($165 early bird,
$200 late  registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members, ($205 early bird, $240
late registration). Any institution within Louisiana qualifies for the
member rate.


*****************PRESERVATION MANAGEMENT*********************

Friday, May 16, 2003, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA from 9:00 am
- 4:00 pm.

The workshop will outline the manager's role in organizing and planning
preservation activities in a library or archives. It includes lecture and
discussions covering the following topics: the nature of library materials,
elements of a preservation program, effects of storage conditions,
organization and planning, selection, and strategies for integrating
preservation into library operations.

The instructor is Julie Arnott, Preservation Manager, SOLINET.

Cost is $105 SOLINET members, ($95 early bird, $130 late  registration),
$145 Non-members ($135 early bird, $170 late registration). Any institution
within Georgia qualifies for the member rate.


******************HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS********************
SURVIVING THE BIG ONE

This workshop is scheduled for, Friday, May 30, 2003 at St. Petersburg
College, Pinellas Park, FL from 9 am - 4 pm.

Learn about steps that can be taken before a storm hits that can increase an
institution's chances for minimizing damage. This one and a half day
workshop focuses on the nature of hurricanes, general issues in developing a
disaster plan, making your institution storm-proof, activities before,
during and after the storm, and sources of assistance.

Instructor for this session is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of Chicora
Foundation.

Cost for $105 SOLINET members, all membership categories, ($95 early bird,
$130 late registration); $145 Non-SOLINET members ($135 early bird, $170
late registration). Any institution within Florida qualifies for the member
rate.
