I agree that the Stokstad book is much more diverse, than the Janson and 
Gombrich texts. In my mind, these are good as references, but are quite 
outdated for today's standards. 
My favorite book as an undergrad was 'Differencing the Canon, Feminist 
Desire and the Writing of Art's Histories' by Griselda Pollock

Or anything by Griselda Pollack for that matter.
