My general rule of thumb with my outdoor sculpture, if it does not come off
easily, then leave it for the conservators. Most of us are not qualified
for such activities, and often make the problems worse.

The only other solvents I might try are denatured alcohol and/or tolune,
but take care. Tolune is highly toxic, and can also drive the stain farther
into the concrete. If you choose to risk it, use gloves with all the
solvents, and use cuetips or some other tool to lift the stain off(assuming
toluene has any effect), rather than pouring/brushing on the solvent.

Good luck.

Hello all,

We have had some vandalism on our site. Fortunately
it was not on the McKinley National Memorial itself,
but rather on a small gazebo behind it.

The gazebo is made of concrete, and the writing was
done in thick, black permanent marker.

Our maintenance staff has requested that I ask this
group for a possible cleaning solution. They have
already tried acetone and it didn't budge at all.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Kim Kenney
