Hi Kristin,

In our museum the Collections Committee is entirely separate.
Collections deals with acquisitions, conservation, collections storage,
collections technology, supply orders, etc.. These issues have very
little to do with education so I can't see how those committees would
ever merge. The sections interact for staff meetings and particularly
for exhibit development (a separate committee), but the day to day
subject matter is very different.

If you're talking about exhibit development and upkeep, then it makes a
lot of sense to have a committee with members from every section
(Exhibits, Education, Collections, Archives, Administration). But if
each area handled their internal section business at one big meeting it
would take a long time! You might also need a translator because
educators and curators seem to speak two different languages (just
joking...sort of).

This might be completely different in a small museum or historic house
where the entire collection is on exhibit or staff members do serious
multi-tasking.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Education Committee

I am looking for background information for why museums should have
separate Collections and Education Committees rather than a joint
Collections/Education Committee.

1. Are there any museums that have a joint Collections/Education
Committee? What are the pros and cons?
2. Are there any museums that have a separate Collections and Education
Committee? What are the pros and cons?
3. Does your committee have a Committee Responsibility statement that
you could share?
4. Is there any other references that I can look into?

Thank you for your help!

Sincerely,

Kristin Mravinec
