We re-visiting once again how we produce labels for our art museum.
Initially, we generated these in-house creating the labels in Word,
printing them out on high-quality paper, and mounting on Foamcore.
Inexpensive, but labor intensive. Also, difficult to maintain a
consistent level of quality especially since I rely heavily on volunteer
labor. So I tried outsourcing to a printing company who created the
labels on a plastic material. Great looking labels, quick turn around,
etc. However, I have to have at least a dozen labels printed at once to
get a decent price which means we often several works of art unlabeled at
any given time. Also, if we decide (as we are considering) to change the
format of the labels, a full reprint is costly.

I would like to hear from other museums about your solutions - in house or
outsourced - for generating nice looking labels at minimal expense.

"A frank and honest effort in classrooms to face up to the darkest side of
our past, to understand the ways in which social evils evolve, should in
no way lead to cynicism and despair or to a repudiation of our heritage.
The development of maturity means a capacity to deal with truth. The more
we recognize the limitations and failings of human beings, the more
remarkable and even encouraging history can be." David Brion Davis
