If you have something to say (as your text shows you do) then by all means feel
free to say it without contorting my words, divorcing them from the context in
which they were given.

I agree with you, incidentally.  And this is why I too said that knowledge
brought in from other contexts could well be sufficient.  You deleted that part
of my text.

The first David didn't say what type of conservation he wanted to do
('artefacts' is too broad to comment upon) - maybe he won't even need basic
chemistry and physics for the work that he has in mind.  On the other hand, my
conservation work requires a lot of formal knowledge, and just as much that was
never formally taught, and continuing research and reading.
