ANNUAL SALARY: $31,085- $37,816. (Depending on experience, continuous service and salaries of existing employees). Employees new to state government typically start at 37,816.

Duties: A.  Interpretive Program Project Research, Design, Development, Planning and Administration:  Establish goals and objectives of the interpretive and education program with the Site Manager. Develop and implement image, educational, and interpretive programs that are targeted to both Virginia and Nevada City users and Montanans. Develop strategies with program managers to incorporate interpretive and educational messages into Commission produced publications, television, radio and web based information systems.  Recommends special projects and designs, researches, and implements all aspects of such projects which educate the public and enhance general knowledge through detailed interpretation of Commission properties. Perform extensive technical historical research before any interpretative planning or development can occur.  Develop ongoing interpretive and educational programs to position Montana Heritage Commission properties in the minds of Montanans as a good investment, of value to the state and a significant part of preserving our cultural heritage.
B. Educational Services, Interpretation, Outreach, and Training: Develop interpretation that is accurate, interesting and engaging; and meets audiences at all levels of education, knowledge and background.  This position is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive historical and educational interpretation plans and programs, on site investigations concerning regional, statewide, nationwide and international themes, managing and implementing various project and program services. Develop and present workshops, programs, and lectures that promote Montana's heritage, interpret its historical places and deepen public appreciation for, and understanding of Montana's history.  Develop evaluation methods to measure effectiveness of interpretive, educational, and volunteer programs, to judge how they performed based on established criteria and objectives for future efforts.  Coordinate with interested parties and providers to schedule group training, identifying cost breakdowns and assignments.  This program will be a new organization in the budget.  This position will manage this organization and supervise the new program consisting of this position, the Curator of History, and the Volunteer Coordinator, as well as seasonal workers, interns and volunteers.  Develop training programs for seasonal and permanent employees and volunteers related to providing quality visitor services, interpretive and educational programming as well related Commission initiatives and policies.
C.  Informational Materials and Other Duties: Prepare publications and research documents by coordinating and/or executing actual complex historical research and interpretive projects for the Commission, public entities, communities, educational institutions, and special interest groups. Research and write historical materials needed by Commission programs including but not limited to articles, professional papers, interpretive text, curriculum materials, historic site evaluations, architectural and historical inventories, community guidebooks, newspaper articles, press releases, and compilations of interpretive materials.  This will include working with the Curator of Collections, the Lead Preservation Specialist, the Curator of History, and/or the Visitor Services Manager on projects related to more than 250 historic structures and the largest Western artifact collection outside of the Smithsonian Institution. This position will supervise two positions.  Supervisory duties include: performance management, discipline, recruitment and selection, work assignment, recommendations of hiring, firing, promotions, pay. Approves leave requests, travel, time sheets, work schedules, and training.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Montana and Western history -- its patterns, themes, literature, historiography, authors, research sources, journals, organizations, architecture, archaeology, heritage properties and historical places. Historical research procedures including work within both traditional written and oral sources, data gathering techniques and methods, historical analyses, and evaluation of historical biases.
 
SKILLS IN: Applying historical knowledge and knowledge of historical research procedures to a wide variety of written and public materials, including but not limited to: curriculum, scholarly books, preservation publications and journals, state architectural and historical surveys and inventories, National Register nominations, site surveys and reports, and environmental impact documents as they relate to historical, archaeological, and traditional cultural resources, lectures, public programs, historic preservation,  publications, and technical assistance materials for lay and interested publics. Using primary sources, such as historical manuscripts and archives. Demonstrated skill in complex professional analysis and research using an extensive array of primary and secondary library and archival and oral history sources. Historical writing, editing and interpretation for publication and public display with experience that includes technical reports, interpretive materials, curriculum materials, public history writing, newspaper writing and full length books. Skill in verbal public presentations-ranging from an accurate and speedy response, to questions, to public programs and to college level instruction.  Serving as the principal investigator on complex, multi-disciplinary projects in the museum, preservation, and historical publications fields - organizing other researchers, writers, teachers, and curators in the preparation of many different kinds of historical materials.  Developing and implementing interpretation, education, and volunteer programs.
 
ABILITY TO: Find quickly historical information, patterns, and references, and draw conclusions regarding accuracy and biases of all social science materials.  Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with a wide range of agency, university, political, and public individuals.  Produce reports, articles, brochures, and other materials using personal computers, microfilm, fiche readers and printers.  Understand and apply the concepts of supply and demand, retail sales, and marketing to programs produced.
 
Education/Experience: The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a master's degree in Museology, History, Historical Administration, Education, Anthropology, Archaeology, Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field and three years of related experience.  Other combinations of education and experience, which could provide these knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies, will be evaluated on an individual basis.
