The University of Washington Graduate School seeks to appoint a highly qualified individual to serve as Program Director of the University’s interdisciplinary master degree program in Museology.  In addition to teaching graduate-level courses in Museology, the Program Director will serve as the leader of the Museology Program and the Graduate Certification Program in Museum Studies with responsibility for overall program direction and vision, curricular development, and student and faculty recruitment. This position will set the future direction of the program, which currently seeks to be the foremost national training program for museum professionals by providing advanced instruction in all areas of museum practice, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and teaching students to think critically about the work of museums.  The program educates students for museum work in many types of museums (e.g. museums for the sciences, history, art, anthropology, etc.)

The position will work closely with the Director of Interdisciplinary Faculty who will coordinate the interdisciplinary faculty committee for this graduate program.  The Interdisciplinary Faculty will have the responsibility to review, revise and approve the curriculum.

General responsibilities of the position include teaching three courses per year; working with a University/community advisory board to enhance the Museology program; working with a Director of Interdisciplinary Faculty who will lead an interdisciplinary program faculty; developing an annual budget; selecting adjunct instructors for the program with input from the appropriate academic units and the program faculty; recruiting and selecting students for admission into the program with input from program faculty; advising students; assisting with internship placements; and alumni development.  The Program Director will have administrative support for programmatic, budgetary, registration and internship placement functions from UW Educational Outreach.

The Program Director will hold an appointment as a professional staff member and a part-time lecturer through the appropriate academic unit.  The position will report to the Dean of the Graduate School.

Requirements: 
A terminal degree and at least five years of experience as a senior team member of a mid-sized to large museum.  Candidates should understand the wide range of emerging issues in museology and have a wide network of professional contacts in the museum field.  The candidate should have demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
