Well, Jennifer, it seems I didn't clarify very well. It is my understanding
that the USNM as such no longer exists. It was still referred to as the USNM
in the 1930s and 1940s. I am not sure when the name USNM actually stopped
being used formally. Someone at the SI asked me what the USNM was; I had
thought they might know something of the history of the institution employing
 them,
but I was wrong. Maybe they have an archivist or historian who could give us
more information.
Regards,
Jane
