I haven't looked much at the federal grants scene lately, so I really can't
speak to that angle.  One idea is to see if there might be local Community
Development Block Grants for which the museum can apply.  Of course, a lot
depends on how the CDBG program is being administered locally.  See

Often, the best funding source for such rehab and adaptations will be the
local community foundations.  To identify the relevant foundation for your
area, see

The same geographic focus limitation is true for private foundations--I
can't really recommend specific ones since the answer will vary by
location.  In my own hometown of Boston, Amelia Peabody is one foundation
that is always good for an elevator or two! ;-)
