I knew an archaeologist who did this for a family day at the Houston
Museum of Natural Science:

Find several little (pint sized) terra cotta flower pots. Paint
designs on the outside of the pots - each one with a different
design. After they're all painted, wrap in a towel and give a good
hit with a hammer, just enough to break them in to largish pieces.
Bury the pieces in several small sand boxes.

The visitors dig out their pots and then can piece them together to
take home!
