Chicago Botanic Garden
Intern, Center for Teaching and Learning 
PURPOSE: To gain experience and knowledge of botanic garden education programs with a special emphasis on youth education, teacher services and school gardening. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a specialized area of the Education Department that focuses on the development, delivery and evaluation of educational programs for school students, teachers and youth pre-K through 12th grade.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Summer Programs
*       Primary responsibility for implementation and maintenance of school program and camp needs in the Children's Garden and Fruit & Vegetable Garden.
*       Facilitate summer Explorations programs - schedule to be determined.
*       Document programs - photos of guided and self-guided programs. Use digital camera and make arrangements with CBG photographer.
*       Camp CBG - Work with Behind the Scenes campers to design and write a camp newsletter.
*       Camp CBG - Assist lead counselors with program facilitation, as needed.
School-Year Programs
*       Assist with development of school-year Explorations brochures. 
*       Assist with development and implementation of new school-year printed materials, such as curricula and educator guides. 
*       Assist with development of school programs marketing plan. 
*       Research and assess school programs pre- and post-visit materials from area institutions. 
*       Assist with development and revision of teacher/educator materials. 
*       Assist Coordinator, School Programs with selection and ordering of plants. 
*       Teacher Training and School Garden Programming. 
*       Assist with planning, development and implementation of educator workshops. 
*       Assist with development and implementation of new school gardening initiative materials and programs
Docent Training
*       Assist with development and facilitation of training programs for summer and school-year programs. 
*       Assist with development of volunteer training materials. 
Meetings, Conferences and Symposia
*       Attend Center for Teaching and Learning, Education Department and Division meetings. 
*       Attend courses of interest offered by the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden.

REPORTS TO: Manager of Center for Teaching and Learning

SUPERVISE: Volunteers

COOPERATIVE RELATIONSHIPS: Community Gardens Department, School of the Chicago Botanic Garden, Horticulture Production and Children's Garden staff

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: College major in horticulture with emphasis in education preferred, although other majors with an interest or emphasis in youth and/or teacher education are additional possibilities. Relevant course work and hands-on experience is desired. Three- or six-month position working 40 hours per week typically Monday through Friday with occasional weekend programs.
