CURATOR OF COLLECTIONS/ PUBLIC PROGRAMS,Center of Southwest Studies, Fort
Lewis College, Durango, Colorado.

The Center of Southwest Studies, a museum, archival repository, and special
collections library, provides the basis for interdisciplinary research by
Fort Lewis College undergraduate students, faculty and staff, and
individuals interested in studying the Southwest.  Collections include the
world-renowned multi-million-dollar Durango Collection.  Considered to
represent the most complete history of Southwestern textiles in existence,
this rare set of 150 items spans more than two hundred years of weaving
history.  The new Southwest Center, a $7.6 million 50,000 SF facility, is
expected to open in January 2001.  This new exempt staff position requires a
multi-faceted professional who will be the staff person chiefly responsible
for the Center's educational and outreach programs (including preparation of
exhibits and the interpretation of artifacts), and also for the acquisition,
management, and preservation of the artifact collections.  The curator
reports to the Director of the Center of Southwest Studies.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Masters degree, preferably in museum studies, fine arts, or public
history.
2. 3 years of demonstrated work experience in a museum setting.
3. Familiarity with Southwest history, culture, and artifacts.
4. Expertise in the curation (including preservation) of textiles and
ceramics.
5. Demonstrated experience in exhibit design and interpretive programs.

Responsibilities: (this description is abbreviated; please see full job

1. Outreach: plans and organizes a variety of educational programs and
exhibitions.
2. Is responsible for the care and interpretation of artifacts
belonging to or on loan to the Center of Southwest Studies.
3. Helps to develop policies and procedures for the management of the
Center's collection holdings, based on accepted museum standards and ethical
considerations.
4. Trains and supervises volunteers, interns, and student workers for
exhibition projects and collection care.
5. Works with the Center's Director to coordinate management of the
Center's museum store.
6. May prepare grant proposals and manage grant projects.

Benefits:  Benefits include professional development opportunities, health
and life insurance, retirement benefits, sick leave, and 16 hours of annual
leave per month.  Salary, approximately $35,000, depends on qualifications
and experience.

About the College: Fort Lewis College is a state-supported liberal arts
institution with an enrollment of 4,300 undergraduates.  Twenty-two percent
of the students are ethnic minorities: 14.9% of the students are Native
Americans and 4.4%% are of Hispanic/Latino heritage.  Durango, a town of
about 15,000 people (an additional 30,000 people live in the surrounding
county), is located at 6,500 feet in the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern
Colorado.  The area has many opportunities for skiing, fishing, hiking and
other outdoor recreation.
