Gail,

I think "vintage photogrpah" can be a loose term. 
Most, I would think would be fine, and I do so myslef
quite a bit.  However, one must remember that vintage
also implies different formats and conditions.  Large
format can be the most diffictult, older large format
scanners can shred a fragile print.  I am not sure of
large format glass negatives, but standard sizes can
be used on a typical flatbed. In regards to a scan
physically damaging the chemical compostion of a
photograph, I don't know of any technical resourses. 
If anyone has any, I would enjoy reading them as well.
