The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is pleased to offer the following 3-day workshop Re/Designing the Museum for professionals in museums, heritage planning, cultural facilities and related organizations.
RE/DESIGNING THE MUSEUM
Museums everywhere are contemplating either new construction or significant renovation to ensure that facilities meet increasingly complex institutional and public needs. However, even as new spaces hold the promise of fresh opportunity, they raise profound questions about the nature of the museum, its role within the community, its sustainability, the politics of collections and the relationships among its functions.
This workshop explores the tensions and excitement inherent in re/designing the museum and provides you with a strategic understanding of factors that influence your museum's architectural planning process. Topics include:
* celebrating the uniqueness of people and place
* the museum as a civic and community space
* the politics of museum architecture from iconographic to deferential spaces
* factors that motivate your museum's desire for new space
* creating a process that grounds the institution in the community telling the story
* getting the support of the community
* key partners and consultants in the planning process
* getting the support of the region, ministries and local interests
* the influence of innovative technologies and virtual spaces on museum design
* current and emerging community and functional requirements
* issues of access and preservation
* the balance of passion and creativity with economic, spatial and administrative practicalities
INSTRUCTOR: George Stockton, BLArch, CSLA, is the Executive Vice President of Moriyama and Teshima Planners Ltd. Since joining the company in 1969, George has worked with educational and civic developments in Canada and overseas and has participated in design and planning projects at the National Museum of Saudi Arabia, Whitby Civic Centre, The Gateway to Ontario and Canada, City of Amsterdam Science Centre, Scarborough Cultural Centre, Science North and the Bata Shoe Museum. George draws on his background as a landscape architect and project planner to explore museum design issues.
