First, sorry for the cross-posting.

This message is to announce the opening of the Niigata Prefectural Museum in
Nagaoka on August 1, 2000. Not only does this museum focus on the
anthropology,
archaeology, and history of Niigata Prefecture, over half of its exhibit
space
is devoted to exhibits on the archaeology of the Jomon era.

Our web page (with some English pages and links, but still under
construction)
is www.nbz.or.jp/index.html. Audio programs in Chinese, English, and
Russian
will be available for foreign visitors.

A special exhibit associated with the opening is as follows:

August 1 - September 17 2000
Jomonesque Japan
This exhibit explores the roots of the Japanese spirit and examines the
meaning
of the Jomon culture for contemporary Japan. Spirals and S-motifs were
common
features in the material culture of the Jomon; these same motifs are
inspiring
modern Japanese artists who are intent on creating a new style. This
exhibit
showcases both artifacts from the Jomon era and contemporary pieces of
Japanese
art.
