When we upgraded our computers recently, our old, reliable workhorse of a scanner refused to
cooperate with the new computer. I did some research, and we ended up buying a new scanner, the
Epson Perfection 3200. It has a light source in the lid, so you don't have to mess around with adapters for
transparency work, which is great for us. I don't really care for the adapter units that a lot of scanners
require as our library scanner has one that theoretically should work for slides, but nobody has been
able to get it to work correctly! At any rate, it's working beautifully for us, and we found the price very
reasonable. I use it to scan transparencies, slides, and regular flat images, and it can also scan strips of
negatives. I think ease of use might trump dpi in most cases, because the highest I've ever had to scan
something for someone has been 600 dpi, and that doesn't happen very frequently.

Subject: choice of scanner

I am looking for advice on which of two scanners to purchase for our
historical society. We will be scanning photographs, negatives, and slides
for archival purposes to retire the originals as well as to sell prints to
researchers. We had two computer consultants work up quotes for us, but
they each choose totally different equipment. The choice for the two
scanners are either a lower resolution scanner with a seprate tray for
slides, negatives, etc (1200x2400 dpi) or a scanner with a higher
resolution but with the adapter in the lid (3200x6400dpi). Which is more
important, the tray or the higher resolution? I would be grateful for any
advice on this topic.
